Center for Studying the Heritage of Soviet Jewry to Appear in Ashdod

Deputy mayor of Ashdod, Vladimir Gershov, received in his office a famous Israeli writer, press secretary of the Jewish Agency ("Sohnut"), David Schechter.
At present, David Shekhter heads the organizing committee for the establishment in Israel of a Center for Studying the Heritage of Soviet Jewry. During the meeting, he spoke in detail about the idea of creating a center.
According to David Schechter, the preservation and development of the heritage of the Jews of the USSR has an important national significance. The center will allow immigrants from the USSR - the CIS and their descendants not only to touch their roots, but also to be proud of the rich cultural heritage of the community, its contribution to the creation and development of the State of Israel, its struggle, and the right to live in a Jewish state. The heart of the center will be a museum. To mobilize funds, it is planned to collect voluntary donations in different countries of the world. The initiative to create the center was supported by the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel Aviv.
David Shekhter asked for the creation of a Center for Studying the Heritage of Soviet Jewry in Ashdod, a city that is rightly called the "Russian capital of Israel." Vladimir Gershov accepted this proposal. He expressed the hope that the Center for Studying the Heritage of Soviet Jewry would become an ornament of Ashdod and another visiting card of the city.
The meeting was attended by the chairman of the city committee for culture Boris Giterman and well-known radio host Victoria Dolinskaya.
