54.5% of the participants in the conference of the party activist Meretz voted for the early reselection of party leader Zahava Galion.
The resolution did not pass, as the charter required 60% of the votes.
The conference was stormy, and a fist broke out between the two participants.
Zahava Galion announced that, despite the no-confidence motion passed by the governing body of the party, she will remain in office until new elections that are due in January 2019 under the statute. In October this year, a new central committee will be elected at Meretz, and Galon hopes that her supporters who support the idea of "open primaries" before the parliamentary elections will win in the elections.
In today's Meretz, unlike "Labor" and "Likud", electoral lists are formed not through general party elections - they are elected party activists. The conference of the party member MERETS did not support Galion's demand to move from this "undemocratic" system to all-party primaries, in which all registered members and paying membership dues can take part.
Zahava Galion argues that changing the system of electoral lists is necessary to update the party and expand its electoral base. It promises to continue the struggle for this reform.
