Lieberman: Yeshiva students must serve

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that yeshiva students are required to serve in the army or undergo alternative service.
"Every citizen of Israel who has reached the age of 18 years is required to undergo either an army or alternative service. Otherwise it can not be. I do not understand why a representative of the ultra-religious sector can not serve in the IDF, "the minister said and added that only a cohesive society can defeat its enemies.

The head of the Defense Ministry at the same time stressed that evaders do not need to be imprisoned, it is enough to deprive them of their benefits, benefits and discounts for studies.
Earlier this week, the Israeli Supreme Court found an amendment to the law on universal military service unconstitutional and violating the principles of equality, according to which yeshiva students may not serve in the army. The amendment was adopted in 2015 on the initiative of ultra-religious parties. For its abolition, eight of the nine judges spoke. The government has been given a year to process the law.
