Experts from Russia and Sweden during the study of the testimony of four selective drilling conducted in Eastern Siberia, recorded an acceleration of melting ice masses in the Arctic shelf of the region, which can be considered critical.
Geologists during the study managed to establish that the rate of vertical changes in the underwater permafrost in the eastern Arctic seas was at least 18 centimeters per year.
Drilling was carried out by specialists of the permafrost Institute of the SB RAS in the period from 1982 to 1983.
Scientists believe that earlier it was assumed that the melting of the order of several meters of permafrost is necessary for several centuries, and through thawing takes hundreds of years.
However, the current rate of change in the underground ice structure seriously worries the experts.
According to experts, the "ice cushion" actively prevents the release of "bubble" methane, but the concentration of gas in the earth's atmosphere can eventually lead to ozone holes and an increase in the temperature regime in the region.
