After arriving in the prison Azaria will undergo a bureaucratic registration procedure and in accordance with the protocol will meet with a doctor, social worker, psychologist and administrator.
Elior Azaria, who was found guilty in the murder of a neutralized terrorist in early 2017, went to the military prison No. 4 in Pristina this morning, where he must serve one and a half years in prison. The prison is located in Rishon le-Zion - a 15-minute drive from his house in Ramle.
In the morning, his friends and supporters came to Azaria's house, who escorted him to the prison, where he was due to arrive by 10:00. At the gates of the prison Azaria and a few dozen of his supporters were waiting for the police, who followed the order. Journalists from all Israeli media also gathered there.
Azaria's lawyer Joram Sheftel told reporters near the house of his client: "This is a sad day for Israel, for the IDF and for 85-90 percent of Israeli citizens - and a joyful day for our Arab enemies and therefore for the Israeli press, too."
In the coming month, the head of the IDF's General Staff, Gadi Aizenkot, will have to decide whether he accepts Azaria's petition to mitigate his punishment. Earlier nachstengshtaba made it clear that he would weigh all the pros and cons and take into account the positive characterization of him as a soldier - an excellent military service.
On the eve of the jail, a meeting of her superiors took place regarding the conditions of detention of Azaria. It promises that the attitude towards him will be the same as for the rest of the prisoners. However, they do not exclude that Azaria will enjoy the increased attention and respect of other prisoners because of the nature of his offense - the murder of a terrorist.
The car with Azaria and his parents drove up to the prison, accompanied by several motorcycles with the friends of the convict.
After arriving in prison, Azariah must undergo a bureaucratic registration procedure and, in accordance with the protocol, meet with a doctor, social worker, psychologist and administrator.
In 10 days he will be entitled to a half-hour meeting with his relatives. Such meetings rely on him every two weeks. In the case of good behavior and the absence of danger to society in six months, he can get the right to a short vacation at home. He will also have the right to petition for the opportunity to celebrate Jewish holidays with his family. This petition will be treated separately by the prison authorities.
Recall that on August 8, the military tribunal in Tel Aviv denied the request of the sergeant of the reserve Elior Azaria to postpone the execution of the verdict.
Chief of the General Staff Gadi Eisenkot spoke about the possibility of pardon.
"If the sergeant of the Azarya reserve decides to file a petition for relief, his petition is subject to serious consideration, which will include a study of all the circumstances of the case, as well as my duty to follow the values of the army and my responsibility for the servicemen," explained the lieutenant general.
The sentence of Elior Azaria, who was found guilty of the murder of the neutralized Palestinian terrorist Aved al-Fattah al-Sharif in Hebron in March 2016, was made on February 21, 2017. The chairman of the Collegium, Maya Helera, sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
On July 30, the court decision on the appeal filed by Elior Azaria against the verdict and verdict handed down to him was announced. The court did not change the decision either by verdict or by verdict.
