The French president condemned the desecration of the memorial, established in memory of Jewish children from the orphanage in Izieu.
According to France 24, Macron today condemned the "shameful and cowardly act that will not go unpunished." The memorial plaque with the names of the victims - 44 children and 7 adults - was broken and dropped to the ground in the city garden of Lyon.
On April 6, 1944, the Gestapo, led by Klaus Barbier, searched the children's home in Izieu and arrested the children and their teachers. Most of them died in gas chambers in Auschwitz. Only one adult survived. In 1987 Klaus in Izie was found guilty of crimes against humanity and subsequently died in a French prison.
