Israel is considering the possibility of creating an underground barrier against terrorist tunnels on the border with Egypt.
A series of obstacles will be a continuation of the line of defense created on the border with Gaza. The barrier will be identical to the underground concrete wall that is being built in the Gaza area.
The main purpose of the wall is to prevent attempts to infiltrate ISIS terrorists from Sinai into Israeli territory.
The Egyptian army has long been waging a grueling campaign against the Islamic State in Sinai. Both sides bear heavy losses, but ISIS still manages to recruit new personnel and make successful attacks against the Egyptian forces.
Last year, the Egyptian army destroyed six tunnels leading from Sinai to Gaza. Accordingly, there is a fear that terrorists can build tunnels leading to Israel.
The cost of building an underground concrete wall on the border with Gaza is 3.4 billion shekels. Construction will be completed in a year and a half.
On the border with Egypt, while only one kilometer of such a wall is allowed to be built. In the future, if the budget is allocated for this, the length of the underground wall will increase to three kilometers. The aim of the project is to protect Israeli settlements in the Eshkol region.
